The first production of this specially commissioned adaptation was in September 1990 at the Royal Theatre, Northampton, directed by Michael Napier Brown and designed by Ray Lett.
The story concerns Huw Morgan and his coming of age, living in the mining community of South Wales in the years immediately before and after 1900. We see the close-knit ties of family and community and follow the influence of a charismatic priest on the Morgan family - especially on Huw's sister Angharad.
The old Huw narrates the story, looking back on his life as a twelve year old and an older teenager, discovering the joys and complications of love and sex.
The production was notable at the time as it was the stage debut of Aled Jones, then 19, who played teenage Huw. Grafton Radcliffe played Huw as an old man and Antonio Campo the 12-year old boy.
The cast also included John Hug, Janet Whiteside, Nicola Glick, Clive Graham, Ian Jeffs, Matthew Radford, Lynette Edwards, Robbin John, John North, Sharon Roberts and Cynthia Cherry.
